Global Terrorism And Its Deadly Consequences
A call for decisive actions
KRIS SAHAY
The dawn of the 21st century has been cursed with the ugly rise of global terrorism beginning with the mammoth destruction of the World Trade Center’s twin towers in fashionable Manhattan, New York. The myth of false security was brutally shattered with the very first airplane hitting the first of the twin towers, killing hundreds of innocent victims even before they had a chance to realize what hit them. The more than 3,000 murdered victims did not even have the remotest possibility of saying goodbye to their loved ones.
The criminal intent of the modern day terrorists is committing murder and the declared “targets” are the absolute innocents of this world, who are not at all responsible for the causes that form the motives of the terrorists to inflict death and destruction. The sad truth was ultimately discovered, that we have home-grown terrorists living in our backyards and neighbourhoods. World citizenry in general and the Americans in particular had been living in a “Utopia.”
Alas! Innocence lost! A similar dastardly act was committed again by the spineless terrorists, who killed and injured hundreds of commuters in Madrid, Spain in 2004. Millions of Spaniards were totally devastated beyond hope, so much that they threw out the government of the day at the next chance. They buckled under the threat of terrorism and subsequently forced their newly elected government to withdraw from coalition forces with the mandate to “liberate” Iraq. The entire Spanish nation swallowed their pride and without any grace and dignity retreated from the task of nation building in war-torn Iraq. Such was the horrendous consequence of one single act of unprovoked terrorism. These monstrous terrorists have many lives evidently. They struck again, this time in Great Britain. They bombed the transit system, killing and maiming several hundred underground train passengers in 2005. Luckily, the British people showed more resolve and courage in dealing with the insane catastrophe than the sorrowful Spaniards were able to muster in spite of their long history of crushing invaders. The world’s largest democracy, India, was struck by the cowardly terrorists, but proud and resilient India stood tall and strong as ever! Bravo to the people of Mumbai in particular and the citizens of India in general for demonstrating to the entire world how to show courage in the face of utter adversity.
Currently, the terrorism-weary world seems to be encompassed by the “triangle of turbulence.” On one side there are the combined forces of Hezbollah, a Lebanon-based radical faction transplanted from Iran, and Hamas, the other splinter group of jihadists (freedom fighters) very active in Palestine; the second side is represented by the state of Israel and the third side includes Syria. To make the devil’s potion even stronger and deadlier, the nuclear might of both Iran and North Korea adds further insult to possible and imminent injury.
Current-day terrorists are posing extreme danger and are a continuous threat looming over this world. Their arrogance is the ultimate truth, reflected by their chilling resolve to bring chaos and destruction. The entire human race had better watch out. We are currently sitting on the most dangerous and super-explosive time bomb with our unprotected backs to the greatest menace this world has ever known in modern times.
These ruthless rogues could easily eradicate the entire human race along with its civilization, which took centuries to come to fruition. The modern- day scientific inventions with all their marvels have so far miserably failed to foresee and protect the world citizenry. Terrorism is dangerous simply because it threatens the very existence of the human race and modern-day terrorism techniques could possibly involve nuclear invasion as well. Today’s terrorists engage in such atrocious acts because that’s the only language they understand and that is their standard form of communication — lethal and corporal!
All world leaders must act in total unison to disarm and eradicate this monster with nothing on its mind but devilish evil desire to gobble up the unsuspecting and the innocent. To worsen matters, the terrorists have been striking with clock-work precision globally. Decisive, deliberate, and definite actions today will save the destruction tomorrow. These terrorists have amply demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that their leadership is uncompromising — politically radical, totally irreconcilable and punctuated with total disrespect for human life. If we don’t act today, I am afraid; there may not be any history or historians left behind to tell the missing humankind of the carnage! Can we afford this quagmire?
