Record number of Bisons named as CIS Academic All-Canadians
It was a record year for the University of Manitoba, as 66 Bisons were named CIS Academic All-Canadians. Student-athletes with a grade point average of at least 3.5 were recognized for their hard work and dedication.Leading the way were Jeremy Walker and Sopear Chhin, both of whom have captured the honour in all five years of their eligibility.
In all, 22 per cent of the 294 Bison athletes were named Academic All-Canadians, continuing a trend that shows Bisons increasingly receiving the honour. Thirty-four per cent of all women athletes were on the list, compared to 14 per cent for the men.
Bison basketball recruits provincial champion MVP
With the return of head coach Rick Suffield, new recruits have been added to the Bison men’s basketball roster. Eric Garcia is one such recruit.
Garcia, a five foot seven point guard, was awarded the MVP after his Sisler Spartans won the provincial championship. He brings to the program an ability to space the floor, hit shots, and defend, all of which will be sorely needed on a team that finished 4-16 last season.
Garcia will also bring to the team an extensive list of extracurricular and academic achievements, including participation in the local Filipino community and honour roll standing.
U of M to be represented at world university golf championship
Brad Kirton, a member of the Bison men’s golf team, will represent Canada at the world university golf championship in Turin, Italy.
Kirton qualified for the team by shooting a four round score of 291, good for a third place tie at the 2006 Canadian university/college championship.
He is one of six members on Team Canada, and is only the fifth Bison to have made the team — joining the likes of Ryan Horn, Steve Bucko, Jilly Hardy, and Tyler Mancini.
