Elections, meetings and presentations make up the bulk of the news this week. However, don’t be turned off, some very important issues are at hand.
A change in the way graduate students pay for university is being considered. The faculty of graduate studies has made a proposal to eliminate all program and continuing fees and replace them with a flat rate of $1,000 per term, which could add up to $3,000 a year. This is causing some anxiety for GSA president Megan Gallant, as she feels this could mean students will now have to pay more to receive a master’s or PhD.
The search for the next president of the U of M continues as a town hall meeting was held where students and faculty were able to voice their opinions on the matter. The general consensus of the meeting ended up being that people want a president from academia, who cares about funding (but not more than anything else) and can to relate to students. Memories of the U of M in the ’60s and ’70s were frequent during the meeting, when apparently the administration often joined students for casual games of touch-football.
Nathan Lewis, a renowned chemist, spoke to students at the university last week. Among his many great accomplishments is his invention of an electronic nose that can identify smells.
Of course, that’s just a touch of what’s packed into the news section, so sit back, relax and enjoy the Toban this week. Our yearly term will soon be coming to an end, and I’m sure once we’re gone, you’ll be missing us!
