Dauphin mayor’s wife murdered
The small city of Dauphin, Man. is home to hundreds of U of M students, past and present, many of whom who were taught at the high school by incumbent mayor Alex Paul, whose wife has recently been murdered, as reported in the Winnipeg Free Press.
Diane Paul was found dead in her home just south of Dauphin on Tuesday March 13, and while the cause of death has not yet been released to the media, the case has been confirmed a homicide.
A prominent member of the community, and owner of Thunder’s Country Restaurant and Saloon — a common meeting place for U of M students home for the holidays — Paul’s death has the community shaken.
Paul’s body was sent to Winnipeg for an autopsy last week, while investigators from Winnipeg, Brandon and Dauphin are working on solving the case.
UBC discovers possible cancer therapy
Researchers at the University of British Columbia have uncovered new information on therapies for metastatic breast and ovarian cancers.
The new treatment would be non-toxic and would work around a protein called podocalyxin that is able to change the shape and adhesive quality of tumour cells, according to a UBC media release.
Although podocalyxin was previously used to predict metastatic cancer (the type of cancer that spreads around the body), the molecules are now being developed to aid in treatment, and to block growth of tumours.
The press release states that according to researchers, this new discovery may lead to new therapies within the next 10 years.
Funding for the project was provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA).
