Toban Talkback - Students voice their opinion on the engineering referendum

Recently 64 per cent of engineering students voted yes in a referendum held to raise tuition by about 38 per cent. The debate leading up to the referendum was heated as two “yes” and two “no” campaigns were officially registered to inform students of the cause.
Question: How do you feel about the fact that students voted in favour of an engineering tuition increase?

Casey Gergely
First-year engineering

I think it’s a good thing. In a few years, if there’s not enough money, engineering won’t be accredited. Our degrees won’t mean much at all.

Phil Dompierre
Fourth-year engineering

I was part of the “yes” campaign. It’s important to know that this is not a permanent fix but the government is going to need to step in.

Alex Drivas
Fourth-year engineering

The only reason I voted “no” was because I thought it was rushed. Voting “yes” means that this is going through and there’s no stepping back. I would have liked to hear that the government would meet us halfway, instead of having students stick their necks.

Nikou Jalayeri
Second-year engineering

It wasn’t fair. UMES was supposed to run the referendum, but they were in the “yes” group. It was a useless thing to have a referendum. They would have raised tuition anyway.
