Bad news for soccer fans: it may be a little longer than originally expected before a new indoor soccer complex pops up on campus. A partnership with the City of Winnipeg to build a multmillion dollar complex at the U of M has been cancelled, partially do to high construction costs. Not to worry however, the administration has already submitted another expression of interest in the project.
The fourth International Polar Year has arrived as of March 1 and the University of Manitoba is playing a huge role. Leading two major projects, the U of M will be conducting research with a team of over 200 professionals, leading several nations in a project that strives to collect information on the north and south poles and how they are affecting everything in between.
The recent engineering referendum held in hopes of determining students’ opinion on a possible 38 per cent tuition increase for the faculty is now over. The “yes” side came away with a victory of 64 per cent of the votes in favour of the increase. Voter turnout was relatively high at 58 per cent.
CFS is also claiming victory as a fall 2006 governmental cut in student summer jobs was retracted, with 90 per cent of funding for the jobs being restored. The Federation is going for all or nothing though, and is pushing for the last 10 per cent. After all, students need to pay off those heavy loans somehow . . .
