Women’s basketball: Bisons recipients of end of season awards
Fourth-year Bison Rachel Hart was honoured for her defensive prowess by being named the 2006-07 Canada West Defensive Player of the Year.
Routinely given the task of guarding the opposition’s best player game in and game out, Hart excelled. She finished the season second in the conference in steals at 3.41 per game, and 11th in rebounds with 6.2 a contest.
The awards didn’t stop there for Hart as she, along with teammate Sarah Holder, were named Canada West second team all-stars. This was the second time that each player was given this distinction.
Women’s hockey: coach and players honoured as team prepares for the nationals
With conference play over, and preparations for the CIS nationals well under way, the Canada West conference gave out their end of season awards.
Among the recipients was Bisons head coach Jon Remple, who was named the Canada West Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, the Bisons had their best season in team history, setting new records in wins, with 15, and points, with 30.
Of course the play of his team had much to do with the Bisons’ success, and because of that, four players were named conference all-stars. Goaltender Stacey Corfield was named to the first team, while forward Leanne Kisil and defencemen Jaclyn Van Deynze and Brenna Leary were named to the second team.
Women’s volleyball: Bisons top rookie and top coach in the nation
Although their season didn’t end the way they had hoped, the Bisons women’s volleyball team still had a terrific regular season and were awarded as such, as Ashley Voth and Ken Bentley were named the CIS Rookie of the Year and CIS Coach of the Year, respectively.
Voth quickly became a leader for the Bisons, winning MVP honours at the pre-season Dino Cup tournament. From then on, Voth was instrumental in leading the Bisons to an 18-2 record, and the No.1 ranking in the nation at the end of the season.
For Bentley, this was the second time he was given this award. He also won CIS Coach of the Year honours in the 1991-92 season. The award is well-deserved for Bentley, as he was able to turn around a Bisons team that failed to make the post-season in the prior two seasons.
Also being honoured for her efforts this year was Bisons setter Katie Davidson. She was named as a CIS first team all-star.
Men’s basketball: Ansah named conference all-star
Isaac Ansah, the Bisons men’s basketball team’s explosive guard, was named to the Canada West second team all-star team.
Ansah’s team-high 21.6 points per game was third best in the conference, while his 4.5 assists per game was good enough for seventh in the conference.
