The latest trend among universities this year has, quite simply, been holding referendums. The U of M currently has one in play for engineering tuition increases and, has just recently passed one-third of one dealing with UMSU fee increases. In addition, the U of S has passed a U-Pass (a universal student bus pass) while students at Simon Fraser University are in the midst of trying to find out what students think of the CFS; not surprisingly, both were via referendum.
The results are in! UMSU elections are now over. Although all of the executive positions were uncontested, almost 2,000 students voted, leaving the executive with an average of about 1,300 yes-votes each. It was a close race for the only competition in the election: Dai Xin Wang won the position of international student community representative by only 53 votes.
In other news at the U of M, a petition is now being circulated to re-instate certain sessional professors whose terms are up at the end of the year, and some problems in residence are being explored by students. Some possible union negotiations may also be thrown into play sometime in the near future.
If you’re looking for CFS-designed clothing, make sure to check out Bluenotes sometime in the near future. A new partnership (sparked by an offensive play on an anti-date rape campaign) between the clothing company and national lobbying group could meld fashion and post-secondary education together forever . . . who would have guessed?
