Men’s volleyball: T-birds send Bisons home for the season

For only the second time in 27 years, the Bisons men’s volleyball team will not be making an appearance at the nationals. Th at is because the UBC Th underbirds dropped the Bisons 2- 1 in the best-of-three Canada West quarterfi nal series.

On Feb. 16, playing in front of an electric home crowd, the T-birds got out to a quick start in the series, taking home a straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 25- 18, 25-15) victory in game one. Toon van Lankvelt led all players with 14 kills, but it was UBC’s team eff ort, including four players with at least five kills, that proved to be the winning formula.

With their backs against the wall, and their season on the line, the Bisons came back on Feb. 17 to take game two 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 25-23, 17- 25, 15-8). The team’s veterans stepped up big, as Josh Klassen had a matchhigh 24 kills and van Lankvelt added another 14.

Perhaps exuding too much eff ort in the previous game, the Bisons were no match for the T-birds in the third and deciding game on Feb. 18. After dropping the fi rst set, the T-birds went on to win the following three, to take home a 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 31- 29) victory, and punch their ticket to the Canada West final four.

The loss ends the season for the Bisons. The last time the team failed to make the nationals was the 1996- 97 season.

Men’s hockey: Bisons season ends on high note

Th ough the season may not have yielded the result that the team was looking for, namely a spot in the playoff s, the Bisons men’s hockey team can take solace in knowing that their season ended on a winning note.

The Bisons took home a 5-2 win on Feb. 17 against the Regina Cougars to leave their season record at 10-16-2. Dustin Hughes, Chris Falloon, and Colin Lafreniere fi nished with two points apiece, as Steve Christie and Justin Harris combined to backstop the Bisons to victory.

The win gave the Bisons a weekend split, as the Cougars were victorious 5- 3 on Feb. 16.

Men’s hockey: International students learn about our national game

On Friday, Feb. 16, the International Centre for Students (ICS) at the U of M hosted its secondannual Hockey Night at the U of M, an event intended to introduce the sport of hockey to eager international students to whom the sport, and likely snow, is brand new.

The two-part event began with a workshop by Tony Rogge, the director of the ICS, and the man who coordinated the event. Rogge spoke to the more than 100 students who gathered for the event, and broke down the sport in as simple a form as possible. Everything from hockey’s lingo to the fundamentals of the game was discussed.

The second part of the aff air was a good old hockey game, between the Manitoba Bisons and the Regina Cougars. Even though the Cougars took home the victory, all those in attendance had a good time.

Men’s basketball: Two Lakeland College stars recruited to the Bisons

With their 2006-07 season over, the Bisons men’s basketball team has already begun looking ahead to their 2007-08 season. In the past month, the team has recruited two players from Lakeland College that they hope will lead them to a much better result next year.

Clarence Smith is a 6’8” forward who averages 20 points a game on a sparking 49.7 shooting percentage.

Trevor Assels is a 6’8” post player, who averages 10.2 points a game, 5.76 rebounds a game, and a league-high 0.76 blocks per contest.

The two players’ size, strength, and toughness will be a welcome addition to a squad that was only 7-15 this year, and missed the playoffs.

Bisons athletics: Big weekend in sports on the horizon

A buzz is in the air, as a host of Bisons teams have important games this weekend, from Feb. 22-24. What’s even better is that a majority of these teams are playing right here in Winnipeg. So come out and show your Bison pride, and cheer on our terrifi c athletes.
