DAVE LIPNOWSKI

On Sunday, Feb. 4, two Winnipeg fire captains lost their lives while searching for survivors in a St. Boniface house fire. Four other firefighters were also injured during the fire when a flashover occurred.

A flashover occurs when surfaces, such as the furniture in a room, reach an extreme temperature, known as a fire point (around 500 degrees C). The high temperature causes the surfaces to emit flammable gases hot enough to sustain combustion and ignite, causing a fireball. On Wednesday, Feb. 14, thousands gathered from around the world to pay their respects to Capt. Harold Lessard and Capt. Thomas Nichols at the MTS Centre.
