The colour of love
MELISSA HIEBERT STAFF
Traditionally, what kind of roses you buy someone one says a lot about the way you feel about her (or him). Every colour sends a different message, and as such, picking the wrong colour can have serious implications, especially for your sex life. Here is a guide to the various rose colours so that you can make sure you get the kind of lovin’ you were hoping for.
Red roses — Obviously, red roses traditionally symbolize love and passion. As such, a gift of red roses screams lovey-dovey romanticism, so expect mushy romantic sex. You know, strewn rose petals on the bed, chocolate strawberries, and all of the rest. (Barf.) However, red is also said to stimulate circulation and raise blood pressure. So if you want to get the blood flowing and hearts pumping, red is your colour.
Position: Anything Kama Sutra. As long as it’s passionate.
White roses — White roses are a symbol of purity and innocence. Perhaps not the wildest colour you can choose, but can still lead to a fun time nonetheless. I’m thinking some kind of “preacher’s daughter” fantasy. The colour white is also the colour of cleansing, so a candlelit bath can help add to the mood.
Position: Missionary. What else?
Pink Roses — Pink roses are traditionally a symbol of friendly love. In bed, this can translate to a more light-hearted and less traditional approach. Pink is a gentler shade of red, and is said to have a relaxing effect on the muscles. Taking turns giving each other massages can make for a sexy and fun time.
Position: Girl on top, leaving both hands free for massaging.
Orange roses — Orange roses signify a friendlier, flirtier, more casual relationship. Also, orange is a bold colour, so it can signify energy and excitement. Orange is said to “stimulate sexual organs,” and “release bodily fluids,” so naturally you’re bound to have a wild time. If you’re going to give your loved one orange roses this Valentine’s Day, prepare for a high-energy and fast-paced romp.
Position: Doggy style. Fun, energetic, and it had to be thrown in somewhere.
Black roses — The black rose is the ultimate symbol of death and dying. Though, in sexual context, black can be taken to symbolize masochism and a darker, sinister kind of sex. Hey, dungeon masters celebrate Valentine’s Day too! Now’s not the time to forget your whips and chains at home.
Position: Strapped down and tied up. May involve permanent scarring.
Mixed roses — Can’t decide? Why not go for the gold and get a multi-coloured bouquet of roses! Better cancel the dinner plans, you’re not going anywhere for a while.
Position: all of the above!
