Track and field: Bisons run third Grand Prix of the season

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Bisons men’s and women’s track and fi eld teams competed in the third intersquad Grand Prix meet of the year at the Max Bell Centre. The meet was a warm-up of sorts for the team, and was more or less there for them to keep in competitive shape and mindset.

Some notable performances were turned in by Kahlicia Pettinger who took the 18-19 women’s triple jump event with a 10.73-metre eff ort, Brian Walker who ran away with the 20-34 men’s 1,500-metre in 3:59.40, and Scott Dressler who cleared 1.80-metre in the men’s 20-34 high jump.

The Bisons now must prepare for the 2007 Canada West Track and Field Championships, to be held right here at the Max Bell Centre on Feb. 23-24. Many of our athletes will also be out trying to advance to the National Championships in Montreal on March 8-10.

Women’s hockey: offensive outburst powers Bisons to a pair of victories

In what seemed like two identical games, the women’s hockey team improved their record to 11-7 with a pair of 4-1 victories over the UBC Th underbirds over the weekend, in front of the home crowd at the Max Bell Centre.

The Bisons, now ranked No. 10 in the nation, came out fl at in both games, twice allowing the visiting team to get on the scoreboard fi rst. The Bisons then showed their grit and mettle in both games, quickly responding with a goal of their own before pulling away with the lead in the next two periods.

Katherine O’Rourke had two goals and an assist over the two games to lead the Bisons, while Jaclyn Van Deynze chipped in an empty net goal and two assists herself. Splitting the wins were goaltenders Stacey Corfi eld and Dana Hoogsteen.

The two wins move the Bisons into second place in Canada West. The team hosts the University of North Dakota in a pair of non-conference games on Jan. 19 and 20, before resuming conference action against the Regina Cougars on Jan. 26 and 27.

Women’s volleyball: Bisons take a split after a difficult weekend in Langley

After a two-game series with the No. 7-ranked Trinity Western Spartans, the women’s volleyball team is lucky to be returning home with one win.

On Friday night, the No. 1-ranked Bisons had to battle from 2-1 defi cit to defeat the Spartans in five sets (25-21, 20-25, 15-25, 25-23, 19-17). Helping lead the comeback for the Bisons were Sarah Morrissette (15 kills, 14 digs) and Sabrina Barnes (12 kills, 13 digs), who hit the game-winning kill in the fi fth set. Th is was the fi rst time that the Spartans have lost all year.

There was no come-from-behind magic to be found on Saturday night for the Bisons, however, as the Spartans were able to avoid the sweep with an easy 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-20) victory over Manitoba. Serving was key for the Spartans, as they fi nished the game with seven aces.

With the split, the Bisons now sit with a record of 9-2. The team gets back to action this weekend with a pair of road games against the Brandon Bobcats on Jan. 19 and 20.

Men’s volleyball: Bisons take one from defending CIS champions

In a rematch of last years CIS’s national championship semi-fi nal matchup, the No. 4-ranked men’s volleyball team visited Langley, B.C., to take on the No. 1-ranked Trinity Western Spartans. The Bisons were able to extract some measure of revenge on the team that bounced them from the national championships last year, with a win on Friday night. Unfortunately, the team was unable to complete the weekend sweep.

Friday night saw the Bisons win a thrilling five-setter (25-20, 25-23, 25- 27, 19-25, 15-9), thanks in large part to the play of Toon van Lankvelt and Matt Balchin, who had 14 and 12 kills respectively.

The Spartans showed why they had only lost two matches all year, as they bounced back with a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19) win on Saturday night. The Bisons were once again led by van Lankvelt, who fi nished the match with 13 kills and six digs.

The Bisons (5-6) will join the women’s volleyball team this weekend in Brandon to take on the Bobcats on Jan. 19 and 20.

Women’s basketball: a pair of road victories lifts the Bisons over .500

In what was easily their most successful weekend of the season, the women’s basketball team was able to defeat a pair of top-five teams on the road. The team was in Saskatoon on Friday night to take on the No. 4-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies. Despite being down for the majority of the game, the Bisons were able to pull out an 84-83 win. Rachel Hart had a near triple-double, fi nishing the contest with 15 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds.

Th ings were no easier for the Bisons on Saturday night, as they went up against the No. 5-ranked Alberta Pandas. Th anks to some hot shooting (the Bisons fi nished the game shooting 53 per cent from the fi eld, and 58 per cent from beyond the arc) Manitoba was able to get their second win of the weekend, taking the game 84-73. Michele Hynes led a balanced off ensive attack with 19 points.

Hart’s terrifi c weekend was enough to earn her Canada West Female Athlete of the Week honours.

The Bisons (8-6) will look to continue their winning ways when they host Th ompson Rivers and Fraser Valley on Jan. 19 and 20.

Men’s basketball: Bisons road woes continue

The men’s basketball team (4-10) continues to struggle away from the Investor’s Group Athletic Centre, dropping their fourth and fi fth straight road games this past weekend against the Saskatchewan Huskies and the Alberta Golden Bears.

On Friday night, the Bisons were in Saskatoon to take on the Huskies. The Bisons fell victim to the deadly three-point shooting of the Huskies, who drained 16 of 23 shots from long range, as they fell 98-73. Manitoba’s leading scorers were guards Isaac Ansah and Eric Garcia, who each had 13 points.

On Saturday night, it was the Bisons’ turn to light it up from long distance, as the Herd went 12 for 23 from three-point range. Unfortunately it was not enough, as the Golden Bears were able to pull out a 88-86 win. Darcy Coss led the Bisons with 26 points.

The Bisons hope a little homecooking will put an end to their three-game losing streak, as they host Th ompson Rivers and Fraser Valley in their next action on Jan. 19 and 20.
