Men’s volleyball
From Jan 5-7 the Bisons took part in the Annual York University Excalibur Classic. The eight-team event showcased some of the best players and teams in the country.
After going undefeated throughout the tournament, the men took on the No. 3-ranked Dalhousie Tigers in the finals. Thanks to a combined 31 kills by Toon van Lankvelt and Nathan Toews, the Bisons easily disposed of the Tigers three sets to none.
van Lankvelt provided a strong presence in the front court all tournament, and was rewarded with tournament MVP honours. Joining van Lankvelt as a tournament all-star was setter Kyle Joslin.
With the semi-final win over Laval, head coach Garth Pischke earned his 1,100th victory.
This win marks the sixth time the men have won the tournament, setting a new record. Laval’s Rouge et Or took home the bronze medal by defeating Queen’s 3-1.
The Bisons get back to conference action with a pair of road games against defending CIS champions the Trinity Western Spartans on Jan. 12 and 13.
Women’s volleyball
The No. 1-ranked Bisons played host to the University of Alberta Pandas and came away with a split, winning on Jan. 6 after falling to defeat on Jan. 5.
On Friday, the Bisons were defeated 3-0. This marked the first time this season that the Bisons have tasted defeat. The Bisons came out flat, and the Pandas pounced, winning 25-12, 25-23, and 25-22.
In the rematch the following night, the ladies rebounded nicely with a 3-0 straight sets victory themselves. Figuring prominently for the Bisons were Ashley Voth, Sabrina Barnes, and Sarah Morrissette who all put up formidable numbers in both games.
The Bisons continue their season by travelling to Trinity Western University to face the Spartans on Jan. 12 and 13.
Men’s hockey
Manitoba played the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in non-conference play this weekend and came away with a pair of wins, the perfect way to start the new year.
On Friday, Jan. 5, the men walked away after a 9-2 shellacking of the Ooks. Saturday’s game was closer, with the Bisons needing a late goal and overtime to pull out the 3-2 victory.
Among the scorers for the Bisons were Nolan Waker, Richard Wood, Rob Smith, and Marco Pellizzari.
Next action for the men, who remain 7-10-1 in conference play, comes Jan. 12 and 13 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre against the University of Alberta. Both games are set to start at 7:05 p.m..
Women’s hockey
After pulling out a win against the University of Alberta Pandas earlier on in the season, the first time the Bisons have accomplished such a feat in a decade, Manitoba was unable to find the same success in a pair of road games over the weekend.
On Friday the Bisons lost 3-1. The lone highlight for the Bisons was a goal by Tammy Brade, the first in her CIS career.
The team fell 5-0 on Saturday with the Pandas dominating the Bisons at every turn, going 3-6 on the power play and out-shooting the visitors 26- 10.
The two losses drop the Bisons record to 9-7 in Canada West conference play. The Bisons hope to get back on track by hosting the UBC Thunderbirds on Jan. 13 and 14. Both games are set to start at 2 p.m..
Women’s basketball
In perhaps the biggest rivalry of the season, the Bisons played a pair of games against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in what has become known as the Duckworth Challenge.
On Thursday night, with the Bisons playing host, the Wesmen pulled out an exciting 83-81 victory, when a Bisons last-second game tying attempt rimmed out. Leading the way for the Bisons in the game was Sarah Holder, who had a monster doubledouble, scoring 22 points and hauling in 14 rebounds.
Unfortunately, the Bisons could not bring the same intensity in the second half of the challenge, as the Wesmen, led by 34 points from the CIS’s top scorer, Uzo Asagwara, cruised to a 82-64 victory.
The Bisons will look to improve on their 6-6 record with a pair of road games this weekend. The team will play the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Jan. 12, then travel to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta Pandas on Jan. 13.
Men’s basketball
Also taking part in the Duckworth Challenge was the men’s team. The Bisons were able to pull out a split over the weekend.
On Friday the men won in comefrom- behind fashion, 75-74. The comeback was sparked by the longdistance shooting of Darcy Coss, who at one point drilled three threepointers in a row.
On Saturday, however, the Wesmen were focused on shutting down Coss’ shooting. They did just that, limiting Coss to just 12 points en route to a 75-56 victory.
The Bisons continue their season with a pair of road games against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies on Jan. 12 and the University of Alberta Golden Bears on Jan. 13.
