The Toban quickie

News in 30 seconds or less

JENELLE PETRINCHUK STAFF

With the new year already well underway, it has become clear that 2007 will be a big year for news, especially at the U of M.

This week’s news section includes a scary reminder of a U of M student and staff member being approached by some armed criminals near campus. Security is now doubled at the Bannatyne campus and will probably end up staying that way.

On the brighter side downtown, the University of Winnipeg celebrated its 40th anniversary last week with a festive day full of fun events.

Some major prospective renovations to University Centre are also looked into, and you can read about the controversy surrounding students being asked to provide their thumbprints before an LSAT, MCAT or GMAT exam. Is it a threat to personal security?

We’re also entering an era of huge change for researchers here at the U of M and all across Canada. High-performance computing has been funded with millions of dollars to improve the connections and systems between different research facilities across the country. This is good news for researchers who will now have access to all the equipment required for their work.

With the promise of an upcoming UMSU election, a provincial election and possibly even a federal election, students and staff at the U of M can look to the Toban for coverage in 2007. Upcoming events such as the Canadian Federation of Students’ Day of Action and Celebration Week will be gracing the pages of the paper within the next month, along with the usual coverage of Senate meetings, UMSU council, Toban Talkbacks and briefs to keep everyone updated and informed.

Best wishes in the new year!
