The Manitoban, the official student newspaper of the University of Manitoba, is seeking creative, passionate individuals to head all sections of the publication.

Experience with independent newspapers and familiarity with the Manitoban are assets, however, training will be provided. Talent, enthusiasm and self-motivation are essential.

Applicants must be current post-secondary students or recent grads. Applications must include a cover letter, resumé, and portfolio, or up to three examples of written or design work.

Positions Available:

Managing Editor (Full-time)

The Managing Editor will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the newspaper's business operations.

Applicants should have experience with book-keeping, handling accounts payable and receivable, and budget planning and execution. The ability to develop positive and prosperous relationships with potential and current advertisers is a must. Previous sales and supervisory experience are strong assets. Superior communication skills are essential.

These are term positions, beginning May 1, 2006 and ending May 11, 2007. Candidates must be presently enrolled at the University of Manitoba or have been a student at a post-secondary institution within two years of the start date. The successful applicants can expect to work between 40 and 50+ hours per week. Workload will vary throughout the year. Positions are not recommended for full-time students.
Remuneration for each position is $19,000 per annum.

Sports Editor

The sports editor will be responsible for overseeing a three to four-page weekly section with an emphasis on university athletics as well as issues related to fitness, recreation, healthy lifestyles, nutrition and professional sports. The successful applicant will forge productive relationships with Bison sports teams and produce meaningful stories above and beyond recapping games.

Comment Editor

The comment editor will write, solicit and edit opinion/commentary pieces and columns on timely topics worthy of debate and relevant to the Manitoban's diverse readership. The successful applicant will seek out and work with contributors to develop an informed, thought-provoking and balanced weekly section of approximately three to four pages. The comment editor will also be responsible for compiling the newspaper's letters section.

All editors will also be responsible for seeking out, working alongside and supervising staff and volunteers, attending editorial board and staff meetings as well as other assigned duties. Editors will be expected to develop healthy working relationships with contributors to ensure all submissions meet deadlines.

Staff will receive a bi-weekly honorarium.

Interviews will be held from May 22-30. Employment will commence on approximately June 1 and will end April 20, 2007. There will be a relatively small commitment during the summer, as The Manitoban publishes monthly beginning June 21. A regular weekly publishing schedule will commence September 5.
