Bison swimmers cap off season at national meet

The Bison men’s and women’s swim teams were in Quebec competing at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national championships, hosted from Feb. 24-26 by Université Laval. The women’s team finished in seventh place out of 21 teams, while the men were tied for18th place out of 23 teams.

Bison rookie Landice Yestrau led the way for the women with three top-five finishes over the course of the event, finishing fifth in the 200-metre and 100m backstroke, and third in the 50m backstroke. Julianne Toogood also finished fifth in the 50m freestyle. On the men’s side, rookie Braeden Taylor finished fifth in the 200m breaststroke.

For the ninth year in a row, the University of British Columbia men’s and women’s teams each took first place, with UBC’s Kelly Stefanyshyn and Callum Ng taking home the honours of female and male swimmers of the year, respectively.


Men’s volleyball squad takes Canada West bronze

The Bison men’s volleyball team took home bronze from the Canada West championships after defeating the U of Saskatchewan Huskies in the bronze medal game in three straight sets.

The Bisons, ranked fourth in the nation at press time, fell in their first game to the nationally first-ranked Alberta Golden Bears in three straight sets before defeating the third-ranked Huskies to take bronze.

Bison setter Drew Venables was named as the player of the bronze-medal game, registering 38 assists for the herd.

The Bisons will now head to Hamilton, Ontario for the CIS national championships, to be hosted by McMaster University from March 3-5. The Bisons are seeded third in the eight-team event, and will play their first game on March 3 against Laval.


Bison track teams compete at Canada West championships

The Bison track and field team was in Edmonton for the Canada West Championships, held from Feb. 24-25 at the University of Alberta. The Bison women’s team took fourth place, while the men took fifth. For complete results, see the Bison Sports website at www.gobisons.ca. The track and field team will host the Boeing Indoor Classic at the Max Bell Centre on Mar. 3-4, before moving on to the CIS championships in Saskatoon, Mar. 9-11.
