Desiree Scott named to Canadian Under-20 Women’s National Soccer Team

Desiree Scott is off to Mexico to play with the Canadian Under-20 women’s soccer team in CONCACAF qualification games from January 18 to 27, after being named to the team last week. Scott was one of the standouts in the Bison women’s soccer team’s inaugural season: she was named Canada West rookie of the year and is a member of the second team All-Star team. The 5’5” striker had eight goals for the Bisons, playing in all but one of the team’s 16 games and averaging over 86 minutes per game. The eight-team tournament in Mexico will select three teams to represent the region at the 2006 FIFA Under-20 women’s world championships in Russia in August. Another Manitoban joins Scott on the team, as Erin McNulty was also named to the team.

Bisons emerge victorious in latest clash with Wesmen in men’s volleyball

The Bison men’s volleyball squad closed to within one game of their cross-town rival U of W Wesmen with a hard-fought victory Saturday, January 14, winning a five set marathon. The two teams showed an enthusiastic IGAC crowd why they’re two of the top teams in the country in an exciting five set slugfest, with the home team coming out on top 3-2 (24-26, 25- 23, 25-18, 22-25, 15-9). The Bisons had 19 team blocks, while the Wesmen could only muster 9.5. The Bisons improve to 6-5 on the season and the Wesmen fall to 7-5. The herd has a game in hand on the Wesmen. The two teams face off again on Wednesday, January 18 at the IGAC as the volleyball portion of the Duckworth Challenge gets underway.
