Letters to the editor
While I have come to expect a certain level of literary license from the Manitoban not common to professional publications, in a recent issue, amid the usual obscenities and vulgar sexual references, I found to my distress a rather shocking commentary. In an article entitled The conservative virus (04/01/2006), author Carson Jerema expends a great deal of effort denouncing several world-views, including conservatism and Christianity, referring to those beliefs as sad, pathetic, misguided and a virus to be immunized against.
While I can recognize the authors attempt at sarcastic humour, the article nonetheless falls tragically short of its mark, sinking from the realm of wit into that of derogation. From a newspaper that publishes such a wealth of material decrying discrimination, I find this article to be sadly inappropriate.
