Bisons and Clan take one match apiece
The women's volleyball team was in Vancouver this past weekend playing two matches versus Simon Fraser. After taking a week off, the Herd took it to SFU in match one, defeating Simon Fraser 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20). However, they couldn't complete the sweep in Lotus Land, as Simon Fraser avenged that loss with a victory of their own over Manitoba by a score of 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 16-14).
In game one of the series, SFU came out flying as they defeated Manitoba 25-23 in the first set. However, Manitoba woke up and reeled off three straight set victories to win the match. The entire match was closely contested, as some late set comebacks made for some tense moments for both teams. Laura Grubert led Manitoba with 20 kills and added 15 digs, and Lindsay Poggemiller added 18 kills to help the Herd achieve victory. Rachelle Thomas led SFU with 19 kills while Andrea Frustaci added 20 digs in the losing effort.
Game two was a different story, though. SFU got out to a solid 2-0 set lead, but Manitoba evened the match at two before heading into the fifth set. Unfortunately for Manitoba, they couldn't capitalize on the comeback as they fell 16-14 in the final set to lose the match. Lindsay Bailey of SFU led all players with 19 kills while Frustaci was again defensively solid with 22 digs. Grubert had another solid performance for the Bisons as well. She had 18 kills to go with 11 digs, while Renee-Claire Gautron added 13 digs in the loss.
Manitoba hosts the University of Alberta Golden Bears this coming weekend at the IGAC. The matches will take place on Nov. 14 and 15, and the opening serve goes at 7 p.m. both nights.
